“American Graffiti” (1973)

Before he changed the films forever with the Star Wars franchise, George Lucas built the blueprint for the coming-of-age genre with “American graffiti”. The film jumps between groups of teenagers (including Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard and Harrison Ford) in search of thrills through the streets of Modesto, California, looking for thrills. As “dazed and confused” 20 years later, “American graffiti” is clearly of time and place, but the recording of the impulses that drive young heads to act is evergreen.

“Baby Girl” (2024)

I can not imagine any other actress in her fifties who would be willing to do what Nicole Kidman does in this erotic drama and plays a powerful manager who begins an illegal affair with one of the interns of her company (Harris Dickinson, “The Iron Claw”). Kidmans Romy simulates a symphony of sexual expression about the two hours of the film, from her breathtaking (false) orgasms with her husband (Antonio Banderas) to her guttural grunt of ecstasy when Dickinson's Samuel gives up her unconventional joys.

“Baby Girl” has greater things about the performance dynamics and cheap dopamine, which is provided by modern technology. But on the basic level, it is about watching Nicole Kidman completely unleashed – or in one scene, literally on a leash.

“The Ruck” (1979)

Steve Martin's first film remains his best film and tells the life story of Humbing Meron Navin Johnson from his modest beginnings as a “poor black child” to his more modest presence in the gutter. In between, Navin acquires a dog whose name we cannot publish, a job at a gas station with the siege of CAN hazers and several friends. But Navin doesn't need it. He doesn't need anything. Apart from his ashtray. And his paddle game. And its remote control. And his …

“Andor”

Tony Gilroy's “Star Wars” shot “Andor” is a little miracle: an exclusive show that is a forerunner of a decades of trilogy that is absolutely essential. Season 1 of “Andor” was one of the best television programs of 2022, a tighter political thriller who dramatized the emergence of a rebellion by the eyes of ordinary people, in particular the strangely shot revolutionary Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). In the second season, Cassian continues to conduct the rebellion and try to help a planet that is slowly destroyed by the empire.

In view of the fact that “A New Hope” was released 48 years ago, it was shocking that Lucasfilm has been waiting to publish a Star Wars project that is specifically targeting its millions of adult fans. Giving a festival director like Gilroy (“The Bourne Identity”, “Michael Clayton”) is the best idea that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had the best idea that had the best idea. Overall, “Andor” is nothing less than the best piece “Star Wars” technology since the original trilogy. (Read my complete “Andor” Spert -2 review here.)
