Jill Sobule Death mourned by the President of the Glaad

After the tragic death of Jill Sobule on Thursday, the President and CEO von Glaad published an explanation in honor of the groundbreaking singer/songwriter.

“Jill was not just a player of the music – she was a beacon for queer artists, and I was incredibly lucky to call her a friend,” wrote Sarah Kate Ellis on Friday morning (May 2). “Long before it was safe or frequent, wrote and sang Jill about sexuality and identity with raw honesty and wit.

“At a time when all of this would have cost everything, she decided on the truth,” continued Ellis. “This courage has contributed to the way for today's artists such as Brandi Carlile, Tegan and Sara, Lil Nas X, Sam Smith, Adam Lambert and so many others who are now proud and open in their music.”

Sobule died at a house fire in Minnesota at the age of 66.
