Chesterfield, Virginia (WWBT)-a 37-year-old man will face two charges after a 3-year-old boy was shot in Chesterfield late Thursday.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on May 1st, the officials were called to the Winchester Green Apartments in the 2800 block of the Avalon Heights Road for the shootout.

“On arrival, officials found a youth victim in the residence who had suffered a gunshot wound. The victim was declared dead at the crime scene,” said Chesterfield police department late Thursday.

“I am sure that this child or child in this house did not notice that there was such a danger, but they have to keep it away from every child, they have to be sure, closed, unload whatever it takes to avoid this,” said Chesterfield capt. Randy Horowitz.

The police said on Friday that the 3-year-old handled the firearm and shot himself. The grandmother's grandmother and legal authorization of the boy identified the child as King Edmond on a Gofundme page.

Jeffrey R. Greene was arrested and charged with neglect of crime and gave a child access to a firearm.

“Greene, who lives in the residence Avalon Heights Road, is known to the child, but not related to him,” said the police.

Horowitz said that there was no accidentally shot it in the region in the region.

“Unfortunately, this happens much more than it should, I think it should never happen,” said Horowitz.

In recent years, Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield have pushed gun owners to secure their firearms safely to keep the children safely.

“A weapon is not something that needs to be put on the table, a weapon is not something that remains loaded when children or someone can get there. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to keep weapons safe,” said 12, Mike Jones, 12 on her side.

Jones said that if you have a weapon, you are completely responsible for keeping you safely and other weapons in your house.

“I'm sorry for this tragedy, but it won't be the last. We will be here again, we will say the same thing, and the person who owned the weapon will have a lifetime with it, but the child will never become the next hero,” said Jones.

Anyone with information can call the Chesterfield County police department under 804-748-1251 or Crime Solver at 804-748-0660.
