Ripe Nichol's death: state procedures for former police officers

On Monday, the public prosecutor took their own case against three former police authorities in Memphis, who defeated Tire Nichols, and aimed to secure a murder conviction after the jury gave a mixed judgment last autumn.

In many ways, the state process that has played before the Federal Supreme Court will be similar: it will concentrate strongly on surveillance and body camera material in which the officials were captured, which Mr. Nichols defeated after trying to escape a traffic stop on foot in January 2023. The process will also consider whether the three defendants acted with their police training.

But on the first day of the proceedings in a stuffy courtroom in Memphis there were some remarkable differences, including statements by Mr. Nichol's mother Rowvaughn Wells.

“My son was hit into a porridge,” said Ms. Wells and her voice trembled with emotions when she described his injuries by the officers. “Under no circumstances would my son have survived,” she added.

The three men on Monday – Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith – have been in prison years ago after they were convicted of manipulation of the federal government in October. Mr. Haley was also found guilty
