The dynamic between Clarice and Hannibal is the core of the “silence of the lambs”. Both think they are smart enough to successfully manipulate the other, but only one of them is right.

Foster and Hopkins' appearances are exceptional, and in less capable hands this film could have stalled, as Hannibal Lecter films did before and since then did.

You have to be foster as a complex protagonist – intelligent, motivated and yet undeniably shaped by the trauma.

You need Hopkins to be credible as a lecter, someone who can act as reserved, collected and urban, but is also completely credible as a master manipulator and sadistic killer.

It is this latter part that gives “the silence of the lambs” a refinement and prestige, which lacks the genre of the serial killer before the film was published and has been striving since then.
