Tragic 3-year death in Chesapeake emphasizes the importance of swimming lessons

Chesapeake, va. – In view of a recent tragedy, the focus is on the importance of swimming lessons for small children.

A 3-year-old was not reacted to a backyard pool at the Foxgate Quarter near the Woodbridge Drive on Sunday morning. The child was taken to the hospital, but unfortunately died on Wednesday. The police investigate the incident.

John Quane, a local grandfather, described the situation as a “nightmare scenario”. He emphasized the need for swimming formation and remembered how he taught his children and grandchildren to swim at a young age. Quane's family has accepted aquatic activities and many members are enthusiastic swimmers and divers.

“This is a tragedy. If you get started your children, almost everything can happen,” he said.

Letha Causby, Senior Aquatics Director at The Greenbrier Family Ymca, repeated Quanes feelings. She pointed out that drowning is the most common cause of death for children aged 1 to 4 years. Causby says the YMCA offers swimming lessons for children aged 6 months, whereby the options for children to adults are available.

“Swimming is a life -saving ability,” emphasized Causby. “We start with parent-child courses and have programs all year round. During the summer we also offer one-week lessons.”

Causby found that the lessons are carried out in small groups to ensure individual attention for each child. “We usually have 30-minute sessions with a maximum of four children, so that we can concentrate on their swimming skills without losing their attention.”

As soon as the future mother, Causby is planning to present her baby to water security at an early stage. “You will probably not start learning some basic security skills long after the age of a few months,” she said.

In addition to swimming lessons, Quane advises that families are considering, fences or obstacles to add their pools for an additional safety layer that could possibly save lives.
