Chatham, Ill. (AP) four children were killed and a few more were injured when a car shattered through a building during a post-school program in a city outside of Springfield, Illinois, the police said.

At 3:20 p.m., the officials answered calls for a vehicle that hit three people outside, rammed through the building and then hit another person before leaving the other side, said Scott Tartter, deputy head of the Chatham Police Department.

The people killed were between 4 and 18 years old, the Illinois State Police said in an e -mail declaration.

Several other people were injured and brought to hospitals, the police said.

The uninjured driver was the only resident of the vehicle and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, said Tarter.

The building and the facilities house Ynot Outdoors, which, according to his website, programs after school and summer camps.

Chatham is a small town with around 15,000 people outside of Springfield, Illinois.
