1 dead, several other injured after SUV plows in pedestrians

One woman has died and some others are injured after a car was plowed in pedestrians in Germany.

The driver of a black Mercedes-G-Class left the street and met eight people at the intersection of Olgastraße/Charlottenstraße, south of Stuttgart's city center, on Friday, May 2, around 5:50 p.m. local time, the Stuttgart police said in a press release.

Five people were “slightly injured” and three more were seriously injured in the incident. A 46-year-old woman died of her injuries in the hospital, the police confirmed. According to reports, one person was revived at the scene.

The fire brigade of Stuttgart wrote on X: “We react to a serious #traffic accident with several injuries to #olgaeck in #stuttgart center. The area is cordoned off and the injured are treated on site.”

The driver was a 42-year-old man, German outlets German wave and RTL Germany reported. His name was not published by the police.

The Stuttgart police said that the incident was a “tragic traffic accident” and not intended.

“According to the current state of the investigation, there is currently no evidence that a conscious act of violence or an attack is proposed,” said the police in accordance with the publication. “Therefore, the Stuttgart police are currently treating the incident as a tragic traffic accident. However, the background to the overall incident is subject to extensive, ongoing investigations. An expert has also been consulted.”

RTL reported that children and a mother were with a stroller.

The children received a “careful all-clear on Friday evening,” said the spokesman for the hospital Stefan Möbius The Outlet. “A child was operated on by traumatologist and oral and maxillofacial surgeons that evening and will then receive further intensive care,” he said.
