Lando Norris wins a rainy and sick Formula 1 sprint race in Miami

Miami Gardens, Florida-McLaren driver Lando Norris, won the Formula 1 sprint race in Miami on Saturday, after a rain-soaked competition produced accidents and ended under the “security car” when marshals collected ruins.

Norris started in third place and jumped to second place in the first corner before overtaking Oscar Piatri during a frenzied series of pit stops during the last race during a raging row of pit stops.

“Nice job. Well done, boys,” said a subdued Norris to Team Radio.

It was an encouraging victory for Norris after fought in the last races and lost the championship lead against Piatri, who took second place in front of Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton.

“I'm so satisfied with it,” said Hamilton, a seven-time world champion who is with Ferrari in his first year after the sprint race. “So far it has been a hard year.”

It was a tragic sprint race for Mercedes Rookie Kimi Antonelli, who took a sensational pole position on Friday and became the youngest pole site in the F1 for every racing format. But he lost positions in a fight with Piatri in the first corner and his car was hit by Red Bull at the governing world champion Max Verstappen in the pit lane.

Antonelli accused Piatri of having pushed him out of the route unfairly in the first corner, but the officials did not take any measures and classified as his maneuver as valid. He took the 10th place outside the points.

Verstappen, who ran third for a large part of the race, received a 10-second penalty for an “uncertain publication” in his pit stop, a mistake by his team.

The shortened race, which was delayed by heavy rain, included several accidents. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc slid into the wall on his lap to the net and did not start. The Williams driver Carlos Sainz could not end after the implementation of his tire.

In the last rounds, Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso fell out after a collision with Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson, who released a security car so that marshals could collect the debris.
