Residents of South Salt Lake, who are normal again after gas leaks

The residents return normally after a gas leak inflamed a fire and forced almost 400 evacuations.

On Sunday, the fire brigade of South Salt Lake and the Unified Fire Authority reacted to a power line caused by a depressed power line.

According to Terry Addison, South Salt Lake's fire brigade, a gas leak appeared at some point, but was undiscovered because the burning gas was odorless.

Addison said the firefighting teams only found the leak until the water bubbled on the floor.

Michelle Real Ocampos, the owner of Real Forklift, said she was concerned that her business would catch fire.

“I'm really stressed, but I can't get too dramatic at the moment,” she said.

Enbridge technicians safely looked at the area on Monday morning after inspecting the area on other leaks.

Robert Hall, a senior consultant of the Pipeline Safety Trust, was grateful that the situation was checked by first aiders.

“It could have been very serious with a distribution line,” he said. “The fact that it was recognized made it possible for the fire brigade and the supply company to take the appropriate measures to stop the gas flow.”

Hall emphasized that Enbridge, although this incident did not cause severe disaster, should thoroughly inspect the gas line infrastructure.

“You have to look at the integrity of the line and make sure that there are no existing leaks,” said Hall. “And if there were already existing leaks, you should carry out a leak survey in this area.”

Kutv 2News turned to a comment according to Enbridge, but a spokesman was not available. Instead, they sent an explanation:

On April 27, Enbridge was called gas to react to a fire in the area of 3400 S and WestTemple in South Salt Lake. Upon arrival it was found that a fallen power line had damaged the natural gas line that fired the resulting fire.

Enbridge Crews certainly worked alongside the local fire brigade, Rocky Mountain Power and other emergency officials, were able to secure and repair the line at the damaged pipeline around 9 p.m.

To ensure public security, a certain area near the incident was evacuated. Road closures have been implemented to isolate the escaped natural gas and contain the fire.

To this morning, gas has been restored to normal operating conditions and customers were able to return to their houses. The crews were able to order all houses and shops to which they were able to gain access. If a customer was not available or not available at home during the first re-fighting and needed support in return, please call customer care at 1-800-323-5517.

We appreciate the collaboration and partnerships with South Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake City Fire and the police who were informed about the necessary evacuations. We also appreciate the American Red Cross and other parties who have set up temporary protection for the displaced people overnight.

Further details about the incident are currently being examined.
