10-year-old girl killed, 2 more hospital stays when Tree falls on home

Atlanta (Wanf/Gray News)-a 10-year-old girl was killed and two of her family members were sent to the hospital after a large tree fell on her house overnight.

The crews of the Atlanta fire department reacted to the 1400 block of the Mims Street SW on Saturday at 3 a.m. when they found that the tree caught in half and collapsed to the house.

Erica Dixon, a fourth grade student at the Kipp Way Academy, died of the effects.

Dixon's mother and grandmother were brought to the Grady Memorial Hospital in ambulance. The two should recover.

Anaré Holmes, spokesman for Atlanta Fire Rescue, said his heart was to the family.

“This is a sad opportunity. It's a tragedy,” he said. “There is no other way to say it.”

Dixon's 14-year-old sister, Akiylah Dixon, first described the terrifying moment for Atlanta News.

“The house has just started trembling. Everything just crashed and I just saw my mom ran through the hallway to get to my grandma,” she said. “I collapsed very badly because it wasn't just my little sister. That was my best friend.”

Firefighters, the Atlanta police and the medical examiner's office in Fulton County stayed at the scene for several hours when the crews of public work tried to cut the tree apart.

The American Red Cross and other agencies were called to support the family.

Governor Brian Kemp confirmed the tragedy on social media.

“This morning we are sad about the tragic death of this young girl as a result of the storms of the last night,” he wrote about X.
