Kentucky Derby Watch Party collects money for nurses in the children's hospital

Iowa City, Iowa (KCRG) – The Kentucky Derby 2025 is in progress, and a watch party in Iowa collects money for the children's hospital at the University of Iowa Stead.

Erika Hunerdosse and some other pediatric oncology medical sisters from the hospital were invited to get to the Kinnick Derby Watch Party free of charge.

“I don't think someone understands how far gratefully can go to nurses. A simple thank you … So that's unreal,” said Hunerdosse.

The organizers of the Kinnick Derby Watch Party do not want gratitude to end on Saturday.

They expect around 20,000 US dollars to collect pediatric oncology nurses.

“Our theory is that if you have security, use this money to the best of strength, you offer better service to the children to whom you help,” said Sydney Bleil, organizer.

Hunerdosse has been a nurse in Iowa City for 14 years.

She says that the money collected is putting a long way back, from buying food to massages or advice.

While the Hawkeye Wave is a great morals, it only happens part of the year, and additional support is not taken for granted all year round.

“At least for me it is a constant memory that someone thought of us, someone took care of us, someone appreciated us, someone is grateful for us,” said Hunerdosse.

According to Hunerdosse, pediatric oncology nurses have a fulfilling and sometimes incredibly challenging job.

While a party of the Kentucky Derby Watch may not be a player, she said that the nurses contribute to the fact that the nurses come back to work and prevent people from being burned out.
