On Saturday, Maurice's family and friends gathered in his house to remember his life.

“I will miss his unconditional love,” said Smith. “He was very smart, very intelligent. He loved sports. He loved his family.”

They said he was the only boy in the family and often acted as a protector.

“When I go to heaven, I will really hug him and tell him that I love him,” said Maurice's younger sister Ze'anna Larry.

But during the vigil's guard rang in the area again.

TMJ4 News Crews at the crime scene reported that it heard at least 20 shots, which triggered a separate police examination near 12 and Meinke.

“It is disrespectful,” said Zaniyah Smith, sister of Whiters. “We lost my brother yesterday and people don't have the respect not to shoot near us.”

The police said TMJ4 that nobody was injured in the second incident.

James Larry, the stepfather of Whiters, asked the members of the community to support each other.

“We need justice and change when it comes to gun violence,” said Larry. “We need people who pay attention to each other.”
