Car accident at the airport in the Philippines kills 2, including young girls

A car fell on Sunday in the Philippines against the entrance to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) in Manila, killed two people and injured several others, said officials.

A man and a young girl were killed and four others were injured in the accident in which a black SUV was involved. The Filipino Red Cross, which reacted to the scene, said the girl was four years old, but Vivencio Hizon said she was five years old.

Naia said that a “vehicle accident” took place on Sunday when the car fell through the airport's outside area into the sidewalk near the beginning of Terminal 1.

“We understand how this incident deals, especially since the pictures on social media were spread,” said the airport operator, New Naia Infra Co., in a statement. “We ask the public not to speculate and wait for verified updates that are issued as soon as they are available.”

The first reports show that the SUV was parked near the terminal entrance when the driver accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes, according to the local media, and accelerated after a car suddenly drove in front of him.

People who were injured in the incident received medical treatment. According to the airport operator, the driver of the vehicle who was involved in the accident was detained by the police.

The Land Transport Office announced that it had suspended the driver's license for 90 days while the examination has not yet been completed.

Pictures that were shared by local media showed some people who were on site. The broken glass was seen over the entrance to the terminal and the front of the black SUV was visibly damaged by beating the airport doors.
