Oprah about the lesson death can teach us

Every week OPRAH sets an intention exclusively for Oprah Daily Insider, with reflections on topics such as letting go, forgiveness, in their own and much more.

Dear insider:

What do you think happens when we die? I have had this conversation for decades – both with me and with others. In the high school I won a lot of drama competitions that recited James Weldon of Johnson's “Youngest Day”:

“On this great day,
People, on this great day,
God's appearance to rain the fire.
God's appearance to sit in the middle of the air
To judge the quick and the dead … “

That is what I have accepted and what I preached in every church for a long time and prosper who invited me to speak from Nashville to Baltimore. One day when he sits the pastor in the Sunday service, the congregation chastises because he does not fear God enough, a certain knowledge and a certain peace came over me. I thought I God does not want our fear, but requires our love. Shortly afterwards, I realized that God is all-encompassing, indescribable, really, so much more than my primary school beliefs by a bearded man in the sky, which rained over all US sinners who briefly intended his approval.

I was in the early 20s when I interviewed someone who had a NDE for the first time. I was skeptical, but fascinated, but it was only in 1994 when I interviewed a man named Tom Sawyer, found it for me with a deep a-ha. Tom had flat when a car he worked on. The verdict that he perceived during this nearby experience was in real time, as he treated other people. When he felt the abuse, sadness and grief, he caused his wife in particular, but also many childhood incidents. This is accused so deeply; It felt like the truth. Its truth and of course the deeper truth for every sensitive being. What they put in the universe always return to them. This is the case in life and also in death. It made sense for me.

Indeed, as I learned when I started taking this week Podcast Episode, there may be no better life teacher than death. He told me that he was dead for a few minutes and was waiting for rescue – and that his life flashed before his eyes, just like in the films.

“Love is the only thing you take with you when you die,” he told me. “Nothing else is damn what you love and clearly loves. It is in the long run. It doesn't change.”

As you can imagine, Jeremy's perspective has completely changed to life. “I know what I take with me, what I think and appreciate and appreciate,” he said. Everything else is just “white noise”. Research suggests that others who had Near death experiences They have changed in a similar way: they begin to examine their own life again and fear no more death when he finally arrives.

It is uncomfortable to think about dying, I know. I hesitated and made excuses and I'm a real fear of doing my will. And then it became clear to me that it was an act of true love and took care not to leave my affairs unattended so that my loved ones were found out. And lack of clarity creates contempt and chaos. We will all die and how Walt Whitman says in “Song of Myself”:

“Everything goes on and out, nothing collapses,
And to die differs from what everyone suspected and good luck.

Is anyone lucky enough to be born?
I hurry to inform him or her that it is just as happy to die and I know.
I exist with the dying and the birth with the new baby and I am not included between my hat and boots … “

I believe that it helps us better, the time we now can better estimate that it better appreciates us every single individual of us if we deal with our mortality or just acknowledge. How do we live well as long as we can – and die well when it is time?

We examined this question at Oprah Daily and I encourage you to read our stories about the topic. Death happens to all of us, so why not be open and honest … and even Celebrate it? Maybe you would like to get into the rivet greaty from Estate planning or Funeral preparationsOr are looking for ways to honor them Memory of someone you love. We even have an essay of a woman who built Your own coffin Peace with their mortality.

But I'm really curious about how to answer this question: What happens when we die? I have insiders. Curious to know your thoughts.
