Workplace security is sparse for NBA trainers, will Mitch Johnson be an exception?

As a rule, the NBA head coach is not a safe position in terms of job security. Depending on which data you are watching, coaches only hold their work on average for two to three seasons. In the past 29 years, however, the Spurs with Gregg Popovich have been an outlier without sales.

Now that the newly appointed Mitch Johnson officially takes over the reins, the fans are in the foreign area. Although San Antonio is very familiar to the rest of the league, it is two generations removed that must recognize the uncertainty of a new trainer.

In view of the previous ones, it is fair to ask how much is given by a runway Johnson. After most of a season served as an interim head coach, it was a great opportunity to get your feet wet with minimal pressure. But now the practice run is over.

One reason for a high coach sales is the property and the low tolerance of the managers towards failure. This is not a completely unfair quality if the general goal of a company gains basketball games. However, progress in the NBA is not always linear, with players or trainers. As many fans know, things sometimes have to be torn down to rebuild them. And although this is understood by everyone, this does not mean that the jobs of the coaches are safe in the process at any time and can often be the first if ownership thinks it is time for a change or if a general manager has to save the face and his own job. It's not about whether a trainer is on the hot seat, but how hot it is at the moment.

Will Johnson be exposed to the same treatment and San Antonio will be another contribution to the NBA Coaching Carousel?

Hopefully not. What a trainer puts a trainer with an organization can be cooked in two things, and one of them can usually lead to the other: a strong basic team infrastructure and championship.

It is important to note that it is clearly “championships” (plural) and not a championship. In fact, the time of one bell seems to be the most dangerous time in the career of a trainer. By 2020, three of the five championship coaches (Frank Vogel, Mike Budenholzer, Michael Malone) were released, with Vogel and Budenholzer being approved twice by the Phoenix Suns. Conversely, this is committed to the second reason why a trainer finds a longevity. Inside, although these trainers won championships, their organizations were not fundamentally strong. Her trainers didn't have much mistakes, which shows a lack of trust from their employers. In order not to say that all shots were undeserved or that everyone was deserved, but it shows the moody environment in which these coaches are not sufficient to win at least a little benefit of the doubt.

It is often said that it is not when a trainer is fired, but when. It is a hard, mostly ungrateful job and can be even tougher if it is responsible for a flowering superstar. But under the rare circumstances of the right trainer and the right amount of trust, it can work quite well.

Gregg Popovich was a rare scenario. He was hired as a GM and received the coaching job alone. From there he was only won. Like Johnson, there were no standard circumstances that ended up the job, and like Johnson, he had a generation superstar who was ready to take over the league.

Another situation can be seen in Miami. Despite some heated moments and LeBron James, the heat demanded the choice of Erik Spoelstra as a coach. It worked out quite well for everyone involved, and Spoelstra is considered one of the best and longest owners of the league.

The parallel, which Johnson can be put here, was what Spoelstra had for him, Pat Reilly. As an executive, Reilly was a former coach with several rings and had full trust and trust in his chosen successors. Spoelstra built up a relationship with the team and Reilly and worked from the video room to head coach over the course of 13 years. Now, when Popovich enters the same executive role, Johnson is his chosen successor, who has been with the organization since 2016. If necessary, he can serve as a guide and sign for him.

In the meantime, Johnson had a win of 0.416. Given the injuries that the Spurs dealt with with their two best players this year, not bad.

The time will show whether Johnson can have more parallels to heat and Spoelstra. At the moment he has the support of a strong organization and seems to have the space to grow and learn alongside his young stars. The hope is that he will be another long -term investment and that the Spurs can continue to avoid the irreconcilable trend of the NBA to hire and discharge coaches. The rest is with him.
