Fourteen children who were arrested in an industrial unit after a fire after a fire were released due to the death of a teenager.

The fire in the Fairfield Industrial Park in Bill Quay in Gateshead broke out on Friday evening.

The fire on the 15 hectare site on Southern Banks River Tyne was registered on Friday shortly after 8:00 p.m.

Det ch Insp Louise Jenkins said it was an “extremely tragic incident in which a boy unfortunately lost his life”.

“Our thoughts are at Layton's family while trying to process the loss of their beloved person.”

The police appealed to everyone with information to contact.

Layton's school, Hebburn Comprehensive, has published a tribute on Facebook, which was: “Our school community is with a broken heart.

“Layton was an estimated and popular member of the 9th grade and he will be very missing by everyone.”

In the meantime, more than £ 10,000 has been collected for Layton's mother over a gofundme.
