Hawkeye Area Labor Council Honors Workers Memorial Day, emphasizes potential safety effects of budget cuts

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (KCRG) – People in East Iowa gathered to honor workers who died at work last year.

On Monday afternoon, the Labor Council from Hawkeye Area marked the “Workers Memorial Day” with a service that included a 45-second moment of silence.

The 45 Iowa workers who lost their lives in the job in 2024 honored.

The union says that cuts in programs such as Osha could influence the safety of workers in the future.

“You cannot do your work as you have to do your job. So we are afraid that it will not only finance at federal level, not only at federal level, absolutely that we already know that this will happen at the state level, said Rick Moyle, Managing Director of the Hawkeye Area Labor Council.

Similar events used to take place in Waterloo and Iowa City.
