ETA Aquarid -Meetor shower: where you can watch

An airillary man and the Milky Way appear during the ETA-Aquarid meteor shower in the night sky, which on May 5, 2024 in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka

The ETA Aquarid Meteor shower is expected to reach its peak on Tuesday morning.

What we know:

Halley's comet swings near the earth every 75 years. However, the debris left behind by the comet lead to two large meteor showers, including the ETA Aquarids.

When this meteor shower illuminates the night sky, you will know that the earth crosses the way of most famous comet“Shauna Edson from the National Air and Space Museum of Smithsonian said.

The ETA aquarides are “pretty fast meteors,” said Bill Cooke from NASA.

Expect 10 to 15 meters per hour under ideal viewing conditions during the highlight on Tuesday morning, said Cooke.

Viewing takes until May 28th.

Where can you watch the ETA aquarids, the meteor shower

Local perspective:

The meteor shoes are most easily seen from the southern hemisphere, but we will be able to see some shooting stars in the northern hemisphere on Tuesday morning before sunrise.

Look east between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. to have the best chance to see the meteor shower.

What is a meteor shower?

Big Picture View:

While the earth creeps up the sun, it flows several times a year through debris that are left by passing comets and sometimes asteroids. The source of the ETA aquarides are debris from Halley's comets.

When these fast -moving space rocks enter the earth's atmosphere, the debris meets new resistance from the air and become very hot and finally burn.

Sometimes the surrounding air shines briefly and leaves a fiery tail – the end of a “shooting star”.

You do not need any special equipment to see the different meteor showers that are over one point annually, just a place from the city's lights.

How to see a meteor shower

What we know:

The best time to observe a meteor shower is in the early pre -switch times in which the moon is low in the sky.

Competitive light sources – like a light moon or an artificial lighting – are the main obstacles for a clear view of the meteors. Cloudless nights on which the moon disappears the smallest are optimal vision options.

And keep looking, not below. Your eyes are better adjusted to create stars if you don't check your phone.

When will the next meteor shower shower?

What's next:

The next big meteor showers, the Southern Delta Aquarids, highlight at the end of July.
