Three people were killed, four others were injured, and nine were missing after a small boat in the early Monday off the coast of San Diego, the authorities said.

The Saniff department of the San Diego County reported that emergency crews, including the US Coast Guard, reacted to the incident at 6:30 a.m. after reporting that a overturned boat in Panga-style near Torrey Pines State Beach.

The coast guard confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that it is actively looking for the nine missing people in waters who are about 15 miles north of the downtown of San Diego.

Panga boats – Open ships that are normally used for fishing – are often busy by smugglers who try to transport people or goods illegally across coastal borders. The authorities have not confirmed whether the ship involved was part of a smuggling process, but the examination has not yet been completed.
