The 50-year-old officer Christine Guerin-Sandoval approached Justin Kula's car near North Spruce and East Bijou, as Kula over Sandoval and another officer, while fleeing the scene in the afternoon of September 28th.

Sandoval died in the hospital. The second officer was treated on the same day and released from the hospital.

Kula was arrested a few hours later. He was condemned to leave the scene of an accident with death, homicide, assault and vehicle murder in February by a jury of El Paso County.

He was sentenced to 48 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections on Friday.

Guerin-Sandoval worked as a community parole officer for five years and, according to her obituary, previously worked in the office of the sheriff of the Pueblo County. She is survived by her husband, two children, mother, three siblings and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In a statement on Monday, officials from the Colorado Department of Corrections said that Guerin-Sandovals Loss could still be felt in the entire agency.

“The memory of Officer Guerin-Sandoval continues to carry out our work. We become their service, their victims or the effects that they were in this department and the community they served,” said state officials.

Kula was represented by the office of the state defense lawyer, which does not comment on criminal matters.
