According to Hannover Fire & Rescue, an emergency evacuation takes place on Hanover's square.

The first call came to York County 911 at 3:13 p.m., said Ted Czech, public information officer of the York County Office of Emergency Management.

The emergency is connected to the 18 Baltimore Street, but the entire block is evacuated, he said.

According to the fire brigade, the area affected by the evacuation is the Baltimore Street between the square and the Walnut Street.

A strong smell of gas has filled the air in downtown Hanover. Evacuated cover their faces with clothing while leaving the area.

It is believed that “there is an electric fire underground that is next to a gas line,” said Czech.

Both met-e-and Columbia gas from Pennsylvania were sent to the scene.

Evacuated are brought to the 33 Frederick Street.

Among the local officials are the Hanover Borough Manager, an engineer, the director of Emergency Management Agency and the Chief Code Enforcement Officer.

The public is asked to avoid the area.
