Shane Riordan breaks the silence of the point at 670, the score

There were only a few details about Shane Riordan's sudden departure of 670 of the score.

The executing producer and the Chicago Radio personality announced his departure from the broadcaster last week. Although his announcement pointed out that it was apparently not mutual, Riordan did not announce the reason for the split.

Matt Spiegel and Laurence Holmes languages open Riordan's departure from the station. Although they did not offer any details at the time, they said that it was a management decision, even if their respective tones pointed out that the departure was not so black and white.

There was not much to do about Riordan's first announcement and Spiegel and Holmes' reaction to it. That changed over the weekend when Riordan finally broke his initial silence and thanked his followers for their “incredible support”.

“My grandfather took me to a Schaumburg Flyers game at the age of 9. We went all the time. He loved sitting on the lawn and watching bathroom independent League baseball. And I did it too … because he did.

“I had never seen a live radio program, but Mike North & Doug Buffone were right there when we came in. We heard WGN (for Cubs Games) and US99 A tone, so I knew that I was on radio, but had no idea that an all-sports broadcaster existed like 670.

“He let me sit there for a few hours because I just had to hear it. I felt like I was in my head. They shared my thoughts and had these microphones that made it possible for them to entertain so many damn people. I needed it.

“I remember that I asked my father when I came home: 'This is a job? I can do that?'

“A year later, the White Sox organized the All-Star game. My parents brought me to the fan festival where Mac, Jurko & Harry made their show live. Forget the baseball. I wanted to watch these boys talk on the radio. Just crazy. The coolest job on earth.

“All of this convinced me that there was no single thing that I wanted to do more than Sport -Talk -Radio. Everywhere in the world. But especially in my hometown and for 670 the score.

“I knew at the age of 9. And after a few tunnel visions and a wild amount of work I had to do it for so long. Working with some of the most talented people I have ever known.

“If I am honest, I am also ready to continue. It is difficult in a place you thought you were forever an intern. I was part -time. I was an executive producer for the Cubs Radio Network.

“Unfortunately, all of this is to say that my time is up there. The fact that it was my dream job is not enough to stay and pass it on to support the family I want as much as I do.

“The score brought me up. I am so grateful and also destroyed on the ground. But you cannot end a book without turning the page. Thank God I know how to read.”

While “management decision” was thrown around in air, Riordan's full reflection draws a more layered picture. It doesn't sound as if the decision is completely mutually, but it wasn't completely forced. The passion for radio was still there – that much was obvious – but also frustration. After crumbling from the intern to the executing producer for years, the job he had always dreamed of was no longer sustainable.

Riordan made it clear that he was not bitter, just honest. If you do what you love, only go so far if it stops specifying what you need. He checked every box that the nine -year -old Shane could have imagined, but in the end it wasn't enough to justify the stay.

It is a tough reality that many people in the media understand all too well. Sometimes the dream job stops making sense, even if you still love him.
