Governor Ivey announces a historical educational budget and the approach of gun crime

On Monday morning, Governor Kay Ivey signed Senate Bill 119 sponsored by sen. Barfoot and Rep. Cynthia Mandel.

The legislative template, which is intended to combat gun violence in the inner city, includes:

  • New weapons ban. It will now be a crime of class C for someone to own a firearm if he or she has been convicted of (a) crime crime or (b) for three crimes within the past five years. It will now be a crime of class C for someone to have a firearm while waiting for certain prescribed crimes for a deposit (e.g. a violent crime).
  • Increased punishment for shooting into the occupied apartment. It will now be a crime of class A – not a crime of class B, as is the case according to the applicable law that someone shoots into an occupied apartment.
  • New sanctions for probation workers for gun farms. It will be easier to sanction subjects and probation workers in possession of a firearm. In addition, a probation assistant now leads to a mandatory revocation of his probation or probation due to illegal guns.
  • Aniah's law expansion. Aniah's law is expanded to include the shootout in an occupied apartment and request to attempt or a conspiracy to commit murder.

Most of the provisions in SB119 will be effective on October 1, 2025. The only exception is the aniah law change, which becomes effective in the ratification of the constitutional change proposed by SB118.

During her speech in the Chamber of Huntsville/Madison County, Governor Ivey announced that she had signed the bill. She noticed: “I am also proud to announce that I signed another law on public security in Alabama this morning – Senate Bill 119 -, which will help to get more villains from our streets to ensure security in our communities. We have a few more through the process and I am confident that they will soon go on the way.”

In addition, the governor in Huntsville announced that she signed the General Fund and Education Trust Fund and the Assist -act.

She said: “These historical investments in the core functions of the government and the training of our students are possible through our track record of conservative budgeting and strong leadership”. The governor added that the ETF “The budgets that we officially made this morning will continue to invest if they invest in the programs proven programs. An active approach to do everything to support students, teachers and parents.
