Special court for the crime of aggression against Ukraine ready for the start

The legal framework for a special tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine is expected to be completed in 2025. The tribunal is expected to work next year.

Iryna Mudra, deputy head of the President of Ukraine's office, explained this to the Ukrinform in a comment.

“The special tribunal could start work next year. This year we will fill the legal framework and start to form the special court – to recruit judges, to create and regulate a secretariat, regulations and procedures. She added that legal work on the tribunal will continue in 2025.

“In particular, there is already a draft advertisement in which the organizational, functional and legal framework of the special court fully tears down. The special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine will be set up in just two years. In view of the complexity and sensitivity of the questions that require a compromise, this is pretty fast,” she said.

Mudra also announced details about the upcoming meetings of external ministers from the coalition of the states on May 9, in which they are expected to politically approve the establishment of the tribunal.

“All work that has previously been carried out by legal advisors from 40 countries that have led to the document package will receive political support. This will be an expression of political support for the further transfer of all developments to the Council of Europe for Formal Implementation. In other words, the Council of Europe will take the necessary steps to establish a special tribunal,” said Mudra.

As reported by the Ukrinform, the Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha called for the conclusion of the final steps that are necessary to build a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine within the Council of Europe.

The constant representative of Ukraine in the Council of Europe Bory Tarasyuk predicts that work on the tribunal charter will soon be completed. He explained that the vote on the common agreement between Ukraine and the Council of Europe, which together with its official institution will form the legal basis of the tribunal, will probably take place in May.
