Update

From 9 p.m. Hannover Area Fire & Rescue officers confirmed that the department was able to clarify the scene and that all evacuated ones were allowed to return home. The Columbia gas crews remain on site to complete repairs.

At around 6:30 p.m., the deputy fire chief of Hannover Area Fire & Rescue confirmed that the fire had failed and the gas leak had been switched off. Firefighters then worked to ventilate several buildings in the city center one after the other, he said.

Early reported

According to Hannover Fire & Rescue, an emergency evacuation is underway near the square of Hanover.

The first call came to York County 911 at 3:13 p.m., said Ted Czech, public information officer of the York County Office of Emergency Management. The emergency is connected to the 18 Baltimore Street.

The evacuation zone has grown since the first report, said Czech. In addition to the Baltimore Street, the area today includes Broadway, York Street and East Walnut Street.

Thirty apartments were evacuated, he said. The area is a mixture of dormitories and companies.

Columbia Gas is preparing to open the street now to get access to the gas line

Emergency call for gas lick led to evacuation

Chief Tony Clousher said they were sent for an outdoor gas leak on Exchange Place, a alley in Baltimore Street. They arrived and found black smoke from the sidewalk.

The assumption is that there is an underground fire that burned a gas line underground, said the boss. MET-ED plunged the power supply into this area, but they have switched on most of the electromut.

Columbia gas digs on an adjacent gas line to try to disconnect and see if this stops the leak, said Clouse.

If this does not work, you could watch three to six hours.

No injuries were reported at this point.

Most people have found different accommodations than the district's office. The Evacuation includes the McAllister Hotel.

Evacuated covered their faces when they left the area

Rescue workers have closed additional streets. The Baltimore Street in the Middle Street, like West Walnut, was closed in the Ruth Avenue.

A strong gas smell filled the air in the city center of Hanover. Evacuated covered their faces with clothes when they left the area.

It is believed that “there is an electric fire underground that is next to a gas line,” said Czech.

MET-ED reports that the power supply is aimed at 642 customers in the region according to the failure card.

Both met-e-and Columbia gas from Pennsylvania were sent to the scene.

A Columbia gas technician is on site and works on the assessment of the situation, said Lee Gierczynski, a spokesman for the company. Seven to eight buildings were evacuated as security.

Evacuated are brought to the city building in the 33 Frederick Street.

Among the local officials are the Hanover Borough Manager, an engineer, the director of Emergency Management Agency and the Chief Code Enforcement Officer.

The public is asked to avoid the area.
