Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) – At a press conference on Monday, the mayor of Montgomery, Steven Reed, spoke about the progress of the city on several important questions, including economic development, crime reduction, investments in the community and educational reform.

Among the topics, Mayor Reed spoke in detail about public security and reported on a significant decline in most major crime categories.

According to the mayor, violent crimes decreased by more than 30% in the previous year, violent crimes declined by 16% and overall crime has decreased by more than 18%.

Reed says that more work has to be done that this year's crime statistics are encouraging.

“We cannot and will not look in the other way in this way. Every life is a tragedy. Every family deserves grief. And our community deserves better,” he said.

The mayor also emphasized ongoing investments by Montgomery Forward, including renovated community centers and the opening of a new fire station in West Montgomery.

“We are not here to manage the decline or the coast with previous achievements,” said Mayor Reed. “We build the Montgomery of tomorrow – Today.”
