“Jugging” thefts are still aimed at customers who have withdrawn money from banks or ATMs, while the EL Paso police are aiming for public aid in the identification of the occupants of an SUV in a recent case.

A bank customer's money was stolen on April 24 in a slump in a vehicle in a supermarket in Upper Valley after the customer had visited a ATM in a Wells Fargo Bank on the west side, Crime Stopper from El Paso Police Liaison SGT. Javier Sambrano said in the crime of the week.

“Jugging” is a kind of crime that thieves lurk near a bank or ATM to see if a customer lifts money. The customer is being followed to another place where the thieves rob the victim or collapsed their parked vehicle, in the hope that the money will be left behind.

Thieves follow ATMATION in West El Paso

On April 24th at 11:58 a.m., a customer withdrew money from an ATM in the Fargo branch industry in the 6950 N. Mesa St. next to the Resler Drive, said Crime Stopers.

The investigators found that the customer from a black SUV – possibly a newer Ford Explorer model – was pursued for about two miles to a Speedway petrol at 4990 Doniphan Drive next to the North Mesa Street, said Crime Stopers.

Outside the convenience store, the SUV parked next to the customer's truck. While the customer was in the shop, a person left a back of the SUV, broke a window to the truck and grabbed the money left behind, which was left behind, reported crime stopper.

Security tips to avoid becoming a juggling victim

  • Be aware of your surroundings at any time. Pay attention to suspicious people.
  • Wear cash discreetly. Never leave money or something valuable in a parked vehicle.
  • Vary the route after the bank's departure. When they are followed, call 911.

“Jugging” thefts have occurred sporadically in El Paso for over a decade, sometimes with theft crew from Houston. The latest cases have appeared since October.
