Local prosecutors work together with the fight against violent crimes

Louisville, Ky. (Wave) – On the same weekend, Louisville was the Kentucky Derby, five people were left dead by a number of violent crimes.

“This weekend was extremely worrying,” said Gerina Whether, lawyer of Jefferson County Commonwealth.

This year, fewer people were killed in the city compared to the previous year. The weekend deaths show exactly what Whe '' Office has against. They do work with a team of more than 40 prosecutors who look at around 4,500 cases.

“One of our younger prosecutors had a court hearing last week in a handgun event and she has a conviction,” said Elizabeth Jones Brown, the first assistant Commonwealth lawyer. “These are the types of cases that we take very seriously and see how the dishes take them seriously.”

Another tool in the toolbox can be found in Frankfort with the team for violent crime (VRT) based in Louisville in Louisville in Louisville, which can handle part of the fall load.

On Monday, the AG office announced that VRT had secured its first conviction since its foundation last October.

“This is not a competition. It is about being able to work together to find out what we can do for Louisville, Ky., For Jefferson County,” said Whether. “For the 783,000 people who just want to get up every morning and don't worry about what happens every day.”

The VRT can help with accused who have no overlapping cases with the law firm of the Commonwealth of the Jefferson County. If it is a case in which a criminal in possession of a pistol or a non -fatal shootout is involved, then he can be treated by prosecutors.

“The general prosecutor's office has a very qualified group,” said Jones Brown. “You will do what you have to do to ensure that the cases are solved in a great way.”

This enables Jefferson County's public prosecutor to combat gun violence and other violent crimes.

“Our team here focuses on building good cases, the result of good results, ensuring that the right people concentrate,” said Jones Brown. “And we only end with sentences that protect the community and protect the victims of these violent actions.”

Make gun violence a “priority”

A focus on gun violence includes the focus on Jefferson County.

Non -fatal shootings also have a great priority. According to the Attorney General, Louisville carried out non -fatal shootings in 2024, and the work of the VRT led 45 crimes on May 5.

“It's just an epidemic of what we look at with gun violence, it is all over the country,” said Whether. “How can we deal with it as a Commonwealth? Not only small people, but as a Commonwealth and our cooperation with the office of the Attorney General enables us to do this.”

WHEHERS 'office even created its own panel to deal with arms. It enables other officers to see how they go strategically and forward.

“I'm ready to go”

Of the five fatal incidents on the weekend, only one stab was. Kevin Beach (57) identified the Coroner office of Jefferson County as a victim on Monday.

“It is sad that we cannot even live properly because people only kill out here,” said Shamika Durden, who lives down the street, from where this happened.

Durden and her husband have lived in Louisville for five years and spent 41st street in their house in the past two years. They count the days when you have to stay there.

“I'm ready to go to be honest,” said Durden. “We are looking for somewhere to stay as soon as possible.”
