Gradmag emphasizes 'four seasons' of the graduate experience

After the success of his debut publication in 2024, the SBU Graduate Arts & Sciences Magazine (Gradmag) celebrated the publication of “The four seasons“His second edition with a reception in the SAC on April 30th.

“The Four Seasons” contains 17 articles on topics that range from modern scientific research to the cultivation of student communities such as the African Graduate Student Association. The magazine also shows original poems and visual art.

Ava Nederlander, founder, president and co-Executive editor of Gradmag, said that the initiative led by students has grown significantly since her debut in 2024, with ten times membership and a living community increasing.

“When I Founded Gradmag in the Fall of 2023, My Motivation Stemmed from a Desire to Integraten My Academic and Research Passions in Both the Arts and Sciences While Simultaneous Bridging the Gap to Communicate Those Disciplines To Broader Audiences,” Said Nederlander, A PhD Candidate in Computer Engineing, Working under Ari Kaufman, Distinguished Professor and Cewit Chief Scientist in the Department of Computer Science. “This goal included the establishment of a multidisciplinary academic organization and the cultivation of a really lively community that comprises prospective and current doctoral students for many departments. We have made enormous progress in a short time.”

“It is hard to believe that SBU Gradmag was only a vision for a room two years ago in which doctoral students could celebrate their work, their voices and their creativity” Department of Neurobiology and Behavior. “I stand here with you all who hold our second magazine in our hands, and I am full of gratitude for how far we have come. This magazine is the result of countless hours of processing, checking, refining, designing and dreaming from the form of the topic to sound the layout. O'Connor said she chose this topic because, like the seasons, it reflects the unique rhythm and the lens that every academic discipline offers.

“If we bring all of these perspectives together, we gain a more rich, holistic understanding,” she said. “This makes this magazine great, the beauty of our differences and the power of unity.”

“We will take bridges even further in the coming year,” said O'Connor. “We work with the Career Center to invite recruiters from jobs from all industries, from science to technology, and our goal is not only to transform bridges into a space for the exchange of research, but also a direct pipeline for opportunities.”

“I am incredibly proud of this beautiful work that the students have published,” said Isobel Breheny-Lauer, deputy director of the student media, the Gradmag. “Ava, Jen and her team did a great job to create a conference and a magazine that emphasizes the work of the doctoral students. In addition, they have a feeling of community and belonging to our entire campus community. I can hardly wait to see where they go next.”

“Our foundation is strong and we have many plans for the future,” said Nederlander. “We have the publication of our third edition, which continues the Bridges conference and expanded and other important initiatives to support student life for the academic doctor, which we cannot expect.
