Hong Kong occupies the 37th overall rank for the security of journalists in the new global index

According to a new global index that exceeds South Korea and Indonesia, Hong Kong took a 37th place of 73 places for journalists, but falls among Singapore and other European colleagues.

With the global index for security journalists published on Thursday, the city was also better scored than the United States in relation to the physical security of reporters, but in areas that measured digital and psychological well -being.

Between 2021 and 2024, more than 30,000 journalists in 73 jurisdiction were interviewed for the joint initiative between the worlds of journalism study research network and the University of Liverpool in cooperation with UNESCO.

The respondents were asked a number of standardized questions about their financial, psychological, physical and digital security in their operating environments. In addition, data from the UNESCO observatory of killed journalists were used for the index.

In Hong Kong, 289 journalists were interviewed between September and October last year.

Hong Kong took a total of 79.17 of 100 37. Security for journalists and exceeded other East Asian jurisdiction, including Thailand (41st), South Korea (47th), Indonesia (49.) and the Philippines (70th).
