Former teacher, who is accused of sexual crimes with the student, asks Richter for custody

A former teacher of St. Paul Charter School, who is accused of sexual misconduct with a former student, is to be convicted this week.

Brandon Bunney writes a letter to apologize and asks the judge to avoid a prison sentence

The background story:

Brandon Bunney was charged with criminal sexual misconduct after the police said he had a persistent sexual relationship with a former student who was 16 at the time.

What you say:

In a letter to a district judge of Ramsey County, Bunney apologized for his behavior and asked in his upcoming condemnation.

“I now know that my behavior was illegal and harmful in 2023,” Bunney wrote and added that sexual behavior with the student took place after he was forced from Hmong College Prep Academy.

Grab deeper:

The investigators of FOX 9 previously reported that the school canceled its contract and instead of releasing Bunney and avoiding the mandatory obligation of the state to report it to the teacher.

“The board is firmly convinced that it is the duty of a district to report such incidents,” said Yelena Bailey, director of the Professional Pedagogue Licencing and Standards Board. “We believe that it is both the moral obligation and the right one.”

In his letter to the judge, Bunney describes his relationship with the student as “professional and appropriate” while he was a teacher.

Personnel records, however, show that the Bunney school previously warned of his behavior, including documented “inappropriate interactions and relationship with a student”.

What's next:

Under the current indictment, Bunney faces the possibility of up to 10 years in prison.

Bunny asked the judge to avoid a prison sentence and write in his letter: “The or two days that were already spent in prison were terrible.”

Bunney is to be convicted in Ramsey County on May 7th.
