The SC committee creates Justice Yashwant Varma in Burnt Cashkandal

An internal committee of the Supreme Court was charged with the judge of the Supreme Court of Delhi, Yashwant Varma, because of a scandal, was involved in the stack of inexplicable and partially burned cash that was discovered in his residence at the beginning of this year. The results of the committee triggered an ultimatum from the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna: to step down immediately or to provide the office.

The three-member committee, which existed on March 22, 2025, was commissioned to examine the disturbing incident that developed on March 14 on the Holi evening when a fire broke out in the official residence of Justice Varma in Delhi.

While the fire was poured over without losses, the discovery of large quantities of currency media with semi -burned currencies at the scene was the discovery that appeared after a video clip that appeared online.

The committee, consisting of top judge Sheel Nagu (Punjab and Haryana High Court), the senior judge GS Sandhawalia (Himachal Pradesh High Court), and Justice Anu Sivaraman (Karnataka High Court) began on March 25th and presented their seal report on May 4. According to this on May 4th, the creed in the justifications of the committee became the judiciary. The judge did not manage to give a satisfactory explanation regarding the origin and presence of the unkalized cash.

Judge Varma, who claimed that at the time of the fire he claimed with his wife in Bopal, claimed that he had no knowledge of the money and described the entire episode as a “conspiracy to frame him”. Only his daughter and older mother were at home during the incident.

Despite his rejection, the investigation came to the conclusion that the allegations justified serious measures. “The report has accused him. The CJI asked him. The first option that was given to him is the resignation. If he resigns, it is good. If he does not do so, the report will be sent to the president who recommends the survey,” said a source familiar with the procedure, as cited by Bar and Bench.

The judiciary Varma was reportedly given until May 9th to react to the CJI guideline.

This marks a rare and serious moment in the judicial history of India. The Supreme Court not only undertook the unusual step to start an internal examination, but also publicly published a preliminary report together with the response from Justice Varma in early March. The video material of the burning money, which was originally divided by Delhi police commissioner, was significantly involved in initiating the probe.

After the incident, the Supreme Court of Delhi Varma sent back to his parent squad – the Supreme Court of Allahabad, where he was recently administered again. However, all judicial responsibilities were suspended under direct instructions from the CJI until the conclusion of the investigation. The Allahabad High Court Bar Association emphasized its return and was protesting in response to the perceived erosion of judicial integrity.

In the meantime, the Supreme Court refused when he asked for a lawsuit for criminal investigations and a FIR against Justice Varma, and quoted the continued internal investigation.

In a further unprecedented turn, the judiciary reported a top -class legal team, including leading lawyers Siddharth Agarwal and Arundhati Katju, and the supporters of Tara Narula, Stuti Gujral, shortly after the examination.
