Trump plans to change how we refer to the Persian Golf

Cnn

President Donald Trump plans to describe the Gulf of Arabia or Arabic Golf on the Persian Gulf, two administrative officials familiar with the discussions who were familiar with CNN.

The expected announcement will be tied to the Middle East next week, where he will visit Saudi -Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, the officials said. They added that talks about the change have not yet been completed, and it is still unclear when the president will make the announcement.

When Trump was asked at an Oval Office event on Wednesday after the name change, he said reporters that he would have to make a decision next week during his departure in the Middle East.

“You will ask me about it when I arrive there and I have to make a decision,” said Trump. “I don't want to hurt the feelings of anyone. I don't know if feelings are injured.”

Trump added that he “received a briefing” about plans for renaming the golf and added that he would make a decision afterwards.

The Arab nations have long pushed that the Persian Gulf, the water in front of the south coast of Iran, was renamed its countries. But Trump's comments seem to recognize that the Iranians, who have long pushed to the waters of the southern costs of their country to continue to call Persian Golf, vehemently take such a step.

The Iranian Foreign Minister warned on Wednesday that such a step “would bring the wrath of all Iranians from all areas of life and political beliefs in Iran, the USA and all over the world.

“I am confident that @Raldonaldtrump is aware that the name Persian Golf has been recognized for centuries old and by all cartographers and international bodies and even used by all leaders of the region in their official communications until recently as 1960s,” wrote the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the “politically motivated attempts” to change.

The Trump government is currently talking to Iran about a potential nuclear agreement.

The Associated Press reported for the first time about Trump's renaming plans.

Trump signed an executive campaign at the beginning of this year to rename the Gulf of Mexico, which Google Maps now listed for its American users as “Golf of America”.

House Republicans try to codify this name change, but encounter a resistance between their ranks.

The renaming of the White House also triggered a dispute with the AP, which led to the participation of the court. As a global news agency with customers around the world, the AP said that he will continue to use the name “Golf of Mexico” in his reporting and in an influential style book name and at the same time recognize the new name “Golf of America”.
