The police officer of Philadelphia shot near the Overbrook High School; Video shows chaotic scene

Philadelphia (WPVI) – A policeman in Philadelphia was shot on Wednesday afternoon, while the fights near the Overbrook High School broke out.

The shots rang at around 2:40 p.m. in the area of ​​N. 59th Street and the Columbia Avenue.

According to police commissioner Kevin Bethel, there were several fights outside the school when additional officials were called. At some point Bethel says that an adult who is armed with a weapon is included, and then a shot is fired.

“During this argument, the individual seems to have fired the weapon into the ground. At this point the weapon, the cartridge, then my officer appears under his vest,” said Bethel.

The officer was once shot in the stomach and brought into the Penn Presbyterian Hospital in a critical but stable state.

Bethel said that the officer did not notice that he was hit immediately when the ball hit directly under his ballistic vest.

The commissioner said fights outside of school were not unusual, but he had strong words that an adult was involved.

“You are a damn adult. You should know better. You should be the one who has to come here to duck, not escalate,” said Bethel.

The adult, only identified as a 30-year-old man, is now in custody. Sources say another teenager was also arrested.

No officers fired their weapons during the incident, and no other injuries were reported.

In a statement, the Philadelphia school district expressed its good wishes for the injured officer and said that all programs after school were canceled.

“There will be a communication that will later be shared in the evening about plans for school operations and support for students,” added the district.

The 26-year-old officer is new to the group and completed the academy in 2024. He was assigned to the 19th district in March.

According to the Philadelphia police, this is the sixth police this year and the second time that an official was injured in service.
