Watch Live: World Watches of Rauch from the Sistine Chapel on the second day of the papal acceptance

The conclave of choosing a new Pope began on May 7th. If you find a short guide to this process, see the “complaves”, Robert Harris, explain the secret tradition and learn more about what the cardinals consider and the importance of choosing a pope.

Vatican City (AP)-thirty-thirty cardinals have confiscated themselves behind the medieval walls of the Vatican to choose a successor to Pope Francis.

With the conclave, PBS News has a live video of the chimney in the Sistine chapel, while the world is waiting for white smoke that signals a successful coordination for a new Pope. Take a look at the video player at 4 a.m.

Here are some things about the election of the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church, which has 1.4 billion believers worldwide.

Why does the conclave take place now?

The conclave was appointed after Francis died on April 21 at the age of 88. There was a delay between his death and the conclave to grant time for a funeral, funeral and a mourning time. It was also necessary to give Cardinals time, to get from all corners of the earth in Rome, and you can get to know you before entering the conclaved, an old ritual that can be explored in mysterious and ritual ritual.

What happens in a conclave?

A festive day started with a trade fair in the basilica of St. Peter. The cardinals went into the frescoed Sistine chapel in procession and sang the meditative “Litani of the Saints” and the Latin hymn “Veni creator” and begged the holy and the Holy Spirit to help them choose a pope.

The cardinals are cut off in the Vatican between the houses and the Sistine chapel, in which they vote secretly – and silently – under Michelangelo's famous blanket Fresco of creation and its monumental “last court”.

The process – fictionalized in the political thriller “Conclave” of 2024 – is to be directed by the Holy Spirit and designed in such a way that they disrupted both contemplatively and freely from the outside.

The Vatican is not a risk and asks cardinals to hand over its phones for the duration of the conclaves and deactivates the mobile phone cover in the Vatican. The end of signals in the Sistine Chapel and in the Domus Santa Marta Hotel and the adjacent residence are used in which cardinals sleep to prevent surveillance and communication with the outside world.

White or black smoke signals?

The voters emitted paper voices and the vote continues until a candidate receives a two -thirds majority or 89 votes. After the vote, ballot papers are burned in a special stove – black smoke does not signal a decision, while white smoke a new pope has been selected.

The voters have to be under 80 and are more geographically diverse than ever. They represent the growing presence of Catholicism in Africa, Asia and Latin America as well as its traditional power base in Europe.

How long does it take?

The longest conclave in history lasted almost three years, but it is reasonable to assume that this conclave will be much, much shorter.

Cardinals said this week they expect a short conclave, although it will probably take at least a few tuning rounds.

Dark Smoke created a first round, who rose to the night sky on Wednesday, and sent a disappointed crowd to disperse in all directions.

In most cases of the last century, it took between three and eight ballot papers to find a Pope. Johannes Paul I. – The Pope, who ruled for 33 days – was elected to the third ballot in 1978. His successor St. Johannes Paul II needed eight. Francis was elected fifth in 2013.

Who are the competitors?

There are no official candidates for the papacy, but some cardinals are considered “papabiles” or have the characteristics required to become Pope.

After John Paul II was broken the Italian hold in 1978, the field has expanded considerably, so that cardinals from distant countries are now considered candidates.

Of the 133 cardinals, which are expected to be correct, 108 were appointed by Francis. They may be a loyalty to continue his legacy – although the deceased Pope was not selected on the ideology, but because of their pastoral priorities and geographical diversity cardinals.

What happens after a new Pope has been selected?

As soon as a candidate receives and accepts the necessary voices, he chooses a papal name and enters the “space of tears” – named after the emotional weight of the upcoming responsibility – to attract his papal robes.

Minutes later he is introduced with the proclamation in Latin in the world from the balcony of the St. Peter Basilica: “Annuntio Vobis Gaudium Magnum: Habemus Papam!” (“I bring you bonds of great joy: we have a Pope!”)

The revelation of his baptismal name in Latin immediately follows, followed by the papal name he chose.

A line that extends to St. Peter and Jesus

Every new Pope is seen as the successor to St. Peter, the apostle, which was appointed chief head of the Church by the Catholics of Jesus. In Matthew's gospel, Jesus tells him: “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church”, a verse that forms the biblical basis for the papacy.

According to the tradition, Peter traveled to Rome to spread the Christian message, and was persecuted there during the reign of Emperor Nero, about 64 AD, martyr. He is said to have been crossed at his own request when he looked at himself unworthy to die in the same way as Jesus.

St. Peter's Basilica is now over what is accepted as his grave.

Why is the Pope important beyond the Catholic Church?

Although the Pope heads a religious institution, its influence extends far beyond. Pope John Paul II played a crucial role in supporting the solidarity movement in his home Poland and promoted resistance to the Soviet rule in Eastern Europe. His moral leadership was attributed by many who contributed to accelerating the end of the Cold War.

Pope Francis, the first Pope from Latin America, became an outstanding voice in global questions from climate change to migration and economic inequality. He demanded compassion with refugees, warned of the dangers of nationalism and asked to protect the planet – attitude that swung far beyond the church walls and sometimes contradicted it with political leaders.

A name to signal a papal direction

The first sign of the priorities of the new Pope will result in the name he chooses.

A Francis II could signal the hug of a new Pope of Francis' legacy to prioritize the poor and edge; A Pius would indicate traditionalist restoration.
