Chatham three children and a teenager were killed and others were injured when a car went through a post-school building in a small town outside of Springfield, Illinois, but the authorities said on Tuesday that it was probably not a targeted attack.

The car left a street, crossed a field and hit the side of the building in Chatham on Monday afternoon, the Illinois State Police said in a statement. It traveled through the building and suggested numerous people before it left the other side.

The police said two 7-year-old, an 8-year-old and an 18-year-old were killed. Six other children were brought to hospitals and one remains in a critical condition.

The driver who was not injured was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and the police said that toxicological reports are pending. The driver, a 44-year-old woman, was not in custody on Tuesday morning and the cause of the crash continues to be examined.

The police said that the crash does not seem to have been a targeted attack. The beaten building houses young people who, according to his website, need other outdoor things that are programmed after school and summer camps.

Although the reason for the fatal crash is not yet known, it was not the first of his kind. Just two days earlier, a car plowed through a crowded street during a Filipino inheritance festival in Vancouver, British Columbia and killed 11 people.

“I cannot collect the words to express a lot of everything that makes sense in printed form. However, I know that our families who have suffered loss and injuries today are very, very badly injured,” said Ynot Outdoors founder Jamie Loftus on Monday in a social media post. “They are friends and their children are like our children.”

According to Loftus, security camera material showed a vehicle that left the road “a considerable distance” and was rotated over the field towards the building.

“Without an obvious attempt to change your direction,” it crossed a street, the sidewalk and the parking lot of Ynot and then into the building, “said Loftus. After the vehicle had driven through the building, the vehicle crossed a gravel road and fell against a electricity and ball field fence.

The video of the scene showed an area behind the building, which was covered with yellow tape and a large hole in the side of the building.

“I am horrified and deeply sad about the death of children and numerous injuries in Chatham this afternoon,” said JB Pritzker, Governor of Illinois, in an explanation on Monday. “My heart is difficult for these families and the unimaginable grief that they experience – something that no parent ever has to endure.”

He said his office had monitored the situation and was ready to give support.

The Chatham police department asked for prayers.

“A terrible tragedy has taken place here that affected us all,” said the department in a Facebook post.

By Monday evening, some members of the community and beyond had changed their Facebook profile photos into a picture of a red band and the words “Chatham Strong”.
