The police are still looking for the driver associated with hit-and-run, in which missionary was killed

Charlotte, NC (WBTV) Fast A week has passed since a young Mormonic missionary was killed in a hit and run in the northwest of Charlotte.

It happened near the intersection of Beatties Ford Road and Celia Avenue, not far from the Northwest School of the Arts.

On May 1st, a group of Mormonic missionaries was traveling in Charlotte and shared the gospel when a driver lost control of his vehicle, walked onto the sidewalk and hit it.

“I was in class because I just taught my students and heard a big bang,” said Patricia Ummanah.

That was a sound of a collision that injured a light post, small trees, a second missionary and claimed the life of 18-year-old Aleki Langi.

Fran Witherspoon has a daycare center compared to the crash.

“There were many people in the community who came out to help the victim, to give CPR or whatever they could do,” said Witherspoon.

One of these people was umbanah, a nurse who ran down and on the other side of the busy street when she called people who call for help.

Remains of the crash can still be seen together with a monument and a light in Langi's memory.

“I didn't see the victim immediately because he was under the trees, that was [knocked] Down, so I went and I saw him and I was just beginning to give CPR, ”said Ummanah.

She told us that she uses certified CPR instructors and nurse, her instincts.

“I know that I can save a life with it, so I tried to do that,” said Ummanah.

Despite her efforts, Langi died at the scene.

The Church of Jesus Christ of the Saints of the last few days says that Langi started his mission work in March and was temporarily in Charlotte while waiting for his visa to serve in Jamaica.

“It was so sad. Everyone was so shocked at the crime scene,” said Ummanah.

Witherspoon was still very affected by what she saw that day and offered condolences.

“It was definitely a sad day. My sympathy definitely goes to the family of the person who was involved and had to receive this tragic news that she had lost a loved one,” said Witherspoon.

The police department of Charlotte-Mecklenburg is examining and actively looking for this driver who has fled the scene.
