A woman was killed and a man was seriously injured on Wednesday at an ax attack at the University of Warsaw.

A 22-year-old Polish man was arrested in connection with the attack, which the university referred to as a “huge tragedy”.

Both victims worked at the university. In a statement, the university said the woman killed was a member of the staff and the injured man worked in safety.

A motif is not yet known for the attack.

The police said the attacker entered College Campus at 6:40 p.m. local time (16:40GMT).

From there he entered a college auditorium, said a spokesman for the district lawyer.

Only a few details have appeared about what happened.

“We express our great grief and compassion towards the family and the relatives,” said the university's rector in an explanation.

May 8th will be a mourning day for college, the rector said.

Another Polish news agency, Gazeta Wyborcza Daily, said the attacker was a law student in the third year.

After the attack, Reuters reporters refrained from the auditorium when the police shallow gathered.
