A television presenter “warms” to the double killer Charles Thompson after coming to face in his new documentary with the name Dead Man Walker: Dan Walker in Death Row

Charles Thompson is still waiting for his execution date after he had spent over 25 years in the death cell

A British TV presenter confessed that he “warmed up” to a double murderer, even though he felt uncomfortable when the death series mentioned dancing with the stars.

In his documentary by Channel 5, Dead Man Walking: Dan Walker in Death Row, Dan traveled to Texas to deal with the topic of the death penalty. There he had a personal encounter with the notorious Charles Thompson.

Dan, who spent 13 years with BBC Breakfast and came strictly in 2021 (UK version of Dancing with the Stars), unveiled contradictory feelings about the killer after the interview.

Thompson was convicted of shot his ex-girlfriend Dennise Haylip (39) and her friend Darren Cain in 1998. He escaped from prison in 2005 after he had been sentenced to death, but finally recaptured and returned to prison.

During her conversation in the Allan B. Polunksy unit in West Livingston, Texas, Thompson spoke about a phone and a canvas with Dan and said: “It's nice to finally hit her. I heard so much about her.”

Dan's surprise was obvious when he asked about Thompson's statement, whereupon the murderer replied: “Yes, your reputation takes you, sir, ahead.”

When asked whether this was a positive thing, Thompson replied: “It's a good thing. I even heard about dancing with the stars of my friends in England.” Dan, who was taken over, noticed: “I hadn't expected you to appear and know everything about me, Charles.”

However, Thompson emphasized his diligence in preparation for visitors and said that he did his “homework” and spoke to “excited” pencil buddies in England about Dan. Dan thought, said Dan, it was a touch to find out that Charles was so well informed about him.

In his extensive period, Thompson put out in solo frustration and revealed that he was only allowed outside of his cell four hours a week.

He noticed Bitter: “I am sure that people have pets who get more out of their cage than that.” The convicted murderer then thought about the day on which he took a life and called it as a “crime of passion”, the result of “two men who fight for a woman”.

“It was the worst day of my life,” said Thompson. “I regret it. I wish I could take it back. When this case took place 27 years ago, I was 27 years old, almost 28 years old, I was an alcoholic, I was equipped with cocaine with hard drugs. I was still very immature for 27.

When she killed his former partner Dennise, she left her only child Wade, who was only 13 years old at that time.

Thompson said he still hoped that he can come to heaven

When asked what he would tell her now, Thompson said with Dan: “I hope that she can forgive me for what happened – and I will see her again. And I like to think that I also have the chance to go to heaven too.

“I feel for the families, I feel for your son, I asked him to forgive myself, and he said he thought the jury has the judgment correctly and he is waiting for it to be carried out so that I had no choice but to accept it, and some people can never go by.

“And that's all I wanted for him – so that he is able to get past it. The biggest wrong thing the criminal justice system sells is that the death penalty brings the closure – it doesn't.”

Dan was initiated by calls to reintroduce the death penalty in Great Britain to Axel Rudakubana's 52-year-old prison sentence for murder of three girls and began an investigation in Texas, the execution capital of America. He visited Huntsville, the country's busiest Chamber of Commerce, where he met with an inmate in the center for the first time.

His immediate reaction was a surprise: “He is gone. Back to loner. That wasn't what I expected.”

When Dan came up with his encounter with Thompson, he admitted to feeling in conflict: “It is difficult not to feel into conflict according to Charles.

When he was looking for a deeper understanding, he said next to the victim's son. The young man had taken the status at the age of 14 and was asked whether he believed that his mother's murderer understood the tremendousness of his actions and their effects on him.

Wade replied and stated his continued uncertainty: “I don't know. I don't have the impression that he did or does it.”
