Cases of crime and child abuse in Kenya fell back in one year in which Kenyans reported less crime

Kenya Had a significant decline in the most important crime and judicial indices in 2024, which indicates a year of modest progress in law enforcement, child protection and the judiciary.

According to current data, as can be seen in the country's National Statistics Office (KNB )'s economic survey, the total number of crimes recorded by the police has reduced 3.5%to 101,200.

This decline shows a gradual change in relation to better public security and more effective measures to prevent crime.

In addition, the Department of Children Services recorded a remarkable decline in child protection cases by 10.8%, which went back to 169,300 this year.

However, this decline is due to a higher public awareness of tracing community initiatives and stronger family support networks across the country.

“The total number of child protection cases reported in the Department of Children services went to 169.3 thousand in 2024,” the report said.

“The police recalled 4,548 ammunition rounds and confiscated 26.9 tons of dangerous drugs during the review period. The ethics and anti-corruption committee pursued assets worth 16.0 billion ksh, of which assets worth 2.9 billion KSH were regained in the review period,” added.

In the report, the behavior of the country's prison system was also emphasized and found that the police have arrested 534 young people and 1,069 foreign nationals.

In the meantime, the number of criminals that received probation strand fell by 27.4% to 5,912, which indicates that the non -customer -specific punishment is less used or that criminal trends and case results have been postponed.

A more detailed insight into the survey showed that personnel conditions in the judicial system have different results.

The ratio of police to civilian fell from 1: 479 to 1: 512, which indicates an increased burden for police officers.

In contrast, the ratio of prison officers and occupants from 1: 8 to 1: 7, while the ratio of probation workers and criminal offenses rose from 1:12 to 1:10.

These changes can help with rehabilitation and treatment of criminals, especially those who serve non-customer-specific sentences.

In addition, the Foreign Ministry of Refugee Services registered 823.9,000 refugees and asylum seekers in 2024, 50.5% of whom came from the Dadaab Camp. From June 2024, 602.1 thousand PWDs were registered at the National Council for People with Disabilities (NCPWD).
