Lawyers under Scanner to Justice Verma Skandal

Gadwal: Justice corruption, Justice Verma scandal, obligation to account for the lawyers, asset agreement, investigation by the Supreme Court, alampure Bar Association. The latest case with Justice Verma has again highlighted the systemic putrefaction.

The incident that shook the basics of public trust included Justice Verma, whose residence was searched and great bundle was reclaimed by cash not reported. According to an investigation by the Supreme Court of India, the allegations of corruption were justified, which led to suggestions from TOP court authorities that the judiciary Verma resigned from its position. The case became a symbol of increasing corruption from courts, from the lower sprouts to higher court positions.

The report emphasizes that lawyers play an important role in maintaining this corruption culture. Initially, some lawyers supposedly prompted court employees with bribes who gradually spread to influence the judicial officers themselves. In the Verma case after the investigation, the Supreme Court recommended all judges. Some agreed, but the public's full trust could still not be restored to the judicial system.

According to critics, corruption in the judiciary has become uncontrolled, similar to the spread of the roots of a banyan tree. According to the state's formation, a remarkable case occurred in Telangana in the former district of Palamuru. A judge named Govinda Lakshmi, who was published in collaps, and another judge who worked in front of the LB Nagar Court was released from the service after allegations against them were proven.

In Jogulamba Gadwal, further concerns were expressed after the formation of judicial districts. In cases in connection with compensation for displaced persons, several court employees were booked by the local police. The case was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and will continue to be actively examined.

The report also indicates the illegal accumulation of prosperity by some practicing lawyers. There are cases in which the judges were supposedly influenced or impaired due to their connections to such lawyers. This underlines the need for greater transparency and accountability in the legal profession.

The President of the Alampur Bar Association, Suresh Kumar (2024–25), demanded reforms. He demanded that the Council of the Legal Council introduced the mandatory disclosure of assets through judges and practicing lawyers every five years. While the Legal Council prescribes the payment of a fee for practice certificates (COP) every five years, it currently does not require a declaration of asset.

Kumar emphasized that the judiciary not only has to clean itself, but also has to become a guardian against corruption in all other institutions. Although there is a vigilance system within the judiciary, the lack of effective enforcement continues to enable corrupt practices to be checked.

In his explanation, Kumar appealed to all legal forces to actively question and oppose against corruption in all levels of governance and society. He explained until there is a real internal reform, the public belief in the judicial system will remain fragile.
