In order to be elected, the chosen candidate received a two-thirds majority-at least 89 votes. At the beginning of this week, the cardinals met in concrete to give up their vote. The voice on Tuesday ended with black smoke and meant that a majority had not been fulfilled.

In 2013 it took almost an hour for the white smoke to be announced for Pope Francis. This year Cardinal Dominique Mamberti from France will give the explanation “Habemus Papam” when a new Pope is selected.

Francis was the first Latin American and the first pop of Jesuit to run the Catholic Church. Over the next 12 years, the 266th Pontiff would call for the Vatican by questioning the traditional roles of the Pope and devoting his life to humility and simplicity.
