'The Big Johnson' makes NYC debut (and takes the main prize)

Photos and reports from Stacie Joy

The documentary, which records the life of Dean Johnson, the Drag Queen, rock star and activist of the 1980s and 1990s East Village, took home the main prize for the best feature.

The film by the author director Lola Rocknrolla, the closing night demonstration in the village of East of Angelika, is a fascinating, unapologist-diving into the chaotic brilliance of Johnson's world. It not only catches up with one person, but a time – with all his danger, your glamor and his defiant joy.

Here is rock nrolla with festival directors (and inhabitants of the East Village) Tony Castle and Roxy Hunt …

Downtown of lights Michael Musto and Chi chi valenti (below) Both can be seen in the film.

With its mix of local stories and brave voices, the festival again demonstrated why it stays in the city center for 15 years.
