Superbet Chess Classic: Deac and MVL Score Bounce Back victory

70 Moves Plus

The second round of the Superbet Chess Classic in Bucharest saw the two players who were lost in the first round, recovered with determined victories. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Bogdan-Daniel Deac both returned to a 50% number of points and defeated Wesley SO or Levon Aronian. In the meantime, Alireza Firouzja was the only leader after signing a highly competitive draw in which he won the opportunities against Jan-Krzysztof Duda.

Vachier-Lagrave's victory came from a sharp but theoretically known line of Ruy Lopez. MVL achieved a slight advantage from the opening with white, although the commentator Peter Svidler found that this variation, which once viewed more promising for white, is now rated as durable due to resources that were shown by modern engines.

The players followed a predecessor to Move 20 and entered a pure rook and knight against Rook and Bishop Endgame with Move 28. MVL had an additional farmer on the A file, but engines rated the position as close as possible.

It seemed to keep the balance for a while. As a strong technical player, the US star kept his chances of drawing alive until he moved when he fluctuated with the enthusiasm 68 … RG8+

The correct defense period, 68 … KB6, would have forced MVL to continue to look for opportunities to maneuver his pieces in order to finally make the best of his material advantage. In the game, however, it was forced to withdraw five trains later, so that MVL had won his first victory of the tournament after a long fight.

Deac also recovered from a disappointing opening round by defeating Levon Aronian in a grinding encounter. Deac, the local wildcard, played patiently and finally converted a small position of position into a full point after a complex technical final. This result delivered the Romanian representative, who had lost in the previous round after a one-movement error (See complete analysis of the game below).

The remaining three games ended with a draw, if not without excitement. Alireza Firouzja fought hard to maintain his chances of winning against Jan-Krzysztof Duda, and reached a dynamic middame in which the French representative was low in time. However, Firouzja was unable to find the precise continuations and had to be satisfied with a 55-miesider ancestor. Nevertheless, he is now the only leader in Bucharest with 1½ points.

In the conflict between Gukesh Dommaraju and Nodirbek Abdusattorov, the world champion was deviated from the Mainline opening theory at an early stage, which led to a strategically rich Middle game, which ultimately left a draw. Similarly, Fabiano Caruana and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu left conventional opening ideas, with none of the players managed to gain a decisive advantage before they agreed to a tie.

Round 2 results

Firouzja, who goes into the third round, will have the white pieces against Caruana in a crucial Matchup, while Deac will try to build on his swing when he faces black opposite Gukesh.
