Cutting Medicaid could increase the risk of crime, warns Dream.org

Washington, DC-Medicaid is one of the most effective instruments for America's crime prevention, and last month Rep. Al Green (D-TX) was censored on the house floor because he interrupted President Trump's speech to congress by repeatedly screaming that Trump had no mandate to cut Medicaid, such a blog post from Dream.org.

Since millions of Americans rely on medicaid for health insurance, proposed cuts of the program could have devastating consequences in March's budget resolution in March.

As a federal health program, Medicaid supports the work of offering Americans with low incomes by offering access to basic health care, psychiatric services and addiction treatment, explained Dream.org.

Although President Trump previously promised that Medicaid was not affected by the budget cuts, according to Dream.org, the financial requirements of the new solution “made it impossible to find the necessary cuts without shortening medicaid”.

The latest reports indicate that Medicaid's reduction is of essential importance for achieving budget goals, since the house committee would remain “600 billion US dollars short” without reducing health expenditure, says Dream.org.

Apart from the primary health services, Medicaid also finances preventive care that visits expensive emergency rooms and supports the efforts to combat opioid epidemic. Medicaid's expansion was associated with almost 10% with a reduction in opioid hospital stays, which in turn lowers long-term health costs.

Critical, as Dream.org emphasized, Medicaid plays an important role in the prevention of crime-related crimes. Studies by the National Library of Medicine showed that the program “creates new opportunities for individuals to maintain treatment and avoid criminalization” and is associated with a decrease in drug -related arrests.

Other studies have shown in a similar way that increased access to addiction treatment through Medicaid expansion contributes to reducing crime. For example, Dream.org emphasized that Medicaid's cuts in Tennessee led to a documented increase in crime rates in 2005.

“Public security has always been a cross -party topic,” said Dream.org, pointing to survey data that show that crime has become a growing problem for democrats and republicans since 2021.

“Whether the perception of crime is increasing or not falling or not, far too many people identify as victims of crime,” added the organization. “If it is important to achieve savings, we should be based on imprisonment for cost-effective strategies to reduce crime and the protection of our communities.”

While GOP leaders argue that their plan focuses on adding work requirements instead of shortening medicaid directly, Dream.org warned that such requirements would lead to many working people losing cover. In Michigan, 69% of Medicaid recipients, for example, stated that the program helped them improve at work by making it easier to maintain or persecute employment.

Despite the claim of the Republicans that the new budget will achieve long -term savings, the proposed cuts for over 1.5 million Americans could reduce or eliminate the health insurance of the federal government, closed Dream.org.

“We should do everything we can to protect people, to prevent persons in need of protection, to turn to crime and to provide resources for people with mental health problems,” said the non -profit organization.

“One of the cheapest and most effective ways to prevent crime is to offer people health care, mental health and drug abuse they need. Shortening Medicaid would increase the risk of crime and undermine public security,” explained Dream.org.
