Toyota has just killed every Corolla in Japan

The popular compact car continues for another year with minor devices

Toyota has just killed every Corolla in Japan

  • The Toyota Corolla has received minor updates for the new model year in Japan.
  • All non-hybrid ice versions were canceled, which means that only the installation is hybrid.
  • Choose additional standard functions, which leads to slight price increases.

Toyota leans even harder into its hybrid strategy at home and doubles on electrified drive lines because it updates one of the most popular models. The car manufacturer has announced several changes to the model year for the Corolla line -up in Japan, but the heading is clear: every version of the Corolla sold there will now only be hybrid.

According to the company, it is part of its broader advance to carbon neutrality if all non-hybrid corollas fall on the Japanese market. This means that buyers only have one option under the bonnet, the 1.8-liter hybrid drive train. It is a step that matches what Toyota did in Europe in 2022, where it no longer sold non-hybrid corollas. However, European customers still have the choice between the 1.8-liter and a more powerful 2.0-liter hybrid variant.

The 1.8-liter petrol engine in the hybrid body produces 97 hp (72 kW / 98 hp). In the models with front -wheel drive (2WD) it works together with a single electric motor that delivers 94 hp (70 kW / 95 hp). The decision for all-wheel drive (E-Four) adds a second electric motor and contributes an additional 40 hp (30 kW / 41 hp).

Further standard equipment

The current 12th generation of Corolla was introduced in 2018 with a slight facelifting in 2022. However, Toyota always improves the compact car with small changes and keeps it relevant to the competition. For this year, Japanese buyers have access to more standard equipment in mid-t-spec models.

LED fog lights and a new set of 16-inch aluminum wheels are wins in both limousine and touring (wagon) body styles. In the meantime, the basic X trim foundations with 15-inch steel wheels with numme cards. It also skipped the infotainment screen, holds a basic analogous instrument cluster and misses the improved headlight design observed in higher equipment. On the bright side, all Corollas now have both ends with LED lighting.

Pricing and availability

The slightly updated Corolla Sport -Fließheck will be offered for sale on May 9, whereby the limousine and the tour variants will follow on May 19.

The pricing begins with 2,279,200 yen ($ 15,700) for the cheapest Corolla hybrid X and is displayed with 3,416,600 yen (23,500 US dollars) for the most expensive Corolla Touring Active Hybrid E-Four Special Edition. The entry-level model is 139,400 yen ($ 960) compared to its predecessor, with the price increases over the selection between 11,200 to 226,600 yen ($ 80 to $ 1,600) depending on the equipment.

Toyota has not revealed much about what comes next, but a new generation of the Corolla is expected to be debut in 2026. The next iteration will probably bring another round of efficiency improvements, a revised hybrid setup, updated styling and more advanced technology.
