With a new Pope who has now explained, many have wondered about the details of the job, especially about the information from the job – how much is he paid.

Pope Leo XIV, the first American Pope in history, was elected on Friday. He said that it was both a cross and a blessing when he celebrated his first mass in the same Sistine chapel.

Leo, 69, born in Chicago, Augustinian missionary Robert Prevost, surprised the world on Thursday when he appeared on the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica as 267.

Leading the church is an incredibly important position and you would think that the payment matches this, but that is not quite the case.

In fact, he does not earn a traditional salary. His need is provided by the Vatican, including food, accommodation, travel and healthcare.

The Pope traditionally lives in the Grand Apostolic Palace, although Francis has decided to stay on the Vatican site on the far more modest Domus Santae Marthae Guesthouse.

Pope Leo's predecessor, Pope Francis, rejected every form of income throughout his time. Nevertheless, the Pope is entitled to a modest content that is estimated at around € 2,500 per month ($ 2,800).

This lean wage is not responsible for a large part of the Pope's value. He has access to a fleet of vehicles, official dormitories and a legitimate donation. When Pope Francis donated 200,000 euros to the inmates of a Roman prison, it came from this fund.

The assets of the Vatican comes from a mixture of donations, investments and income from tourism. The Peter Pence is an annual collection of Catholics from all over the world, which brings about £ 20 million a year.

Donors from the USA make up a large part of the donations. The Americans on the St. Peter's Square were stunned and happy when they learned that the American cardinal was elected to the Pope.

“Who would have thought in our lives that we would see a North American holy father?” Said Father Thomas Montanaro, an American priest with the legionnaires of Christ.

Montanaro was one of the many tens of thousands of people who filled the historical moment of St. Peters. Cheers from “Viva Il Papa” and applause about the crowd to celebrate the new Pope.

Father Darius Lawrence, a priest from California, said that the announcement had caught him completely unprepared.

“As an American, it's a big surprise,” he said. “I never expected an American to be named as a Pope. He was not on one of the lists I had seen – and I had examined it a little.”
