City removes the monument for two motorcyclists who were killed in the crash on the Lake Avenue

Rochester, Ny-Die city Rochester, removed a street monument of the parents of two young men who died in a motorcycle accident. Erin Mahon from News10NBC spoke to the parents about the meaning of the monument.

Almost a month ago, two motorcyclists collided with a car on the corner of Lake Avenue and Phelps. Glen Sutton, father one of the victims, founded a monument to his son at the location. Friday morning he found that almost everything had disappeared from the monument.

The police of Rochester and members of the Department of Environmental Services removed the monument and packed it in orange bags and brought it to the city's fitting on Mount Read Boulevard.

The police say that it decreased the original because of a city policy that maintains the security of public ways. Officials said they had received 16 calls for incidents in the region since the crash.

“Absolutely I put it up again. The memory of my child and my nephew, absolutely,” said Sutton. “Here my son got his last breath and I have to have something for him, do you know?”

Chanderae Martin, the mother of the second victim, who confirmed his death with us on Friday, was there with Sutton on Friday morning to increase the monument again.

“All I have now are memories. This was my place I could come to,” said Martin.

Sutton said he would continue to restore the monument with the help of friends and family and add candles, photos and clothing to the website.

The district manager of Aldi made it clear that the parking lot, while the parking lot belongs to Aldi, the dirt stain in which the monument is located is city ownership. The city has the patch and the sidewalk on which it sits. Technically speaking, Aldi is responsible for maintaining this dirt stain, but it is not part of them.

News10NBC asked the city for its guidelines for monuments and their distance, but was instructed to make an inquiry of the right to information. This story is updated when we get it back.
