After the devastating Eaton Fire, the crime in Altadena rose by 250%, whereby the burglary rates according to the sheriff department of the Los Angeles County have increased by around 400%.

The looters are aimed at evacuated houses and steal copper cables from damaged properties in order to cause the authorities into more than double patrols in the fire zone.

In a recently carried out law enforcement agency, which aimed at copper and metal thefts, the sting of a sheriff achieved 15 suspects in just 16 hours. According to Lt. Ethan Márquez from the Altadena Sheriff's station see eight charges for crimes and seven charges for offense.

The deputies arrested a suspect on April 13 after finding about £ 500 in his car.

The authorities report that suspects, who often operate at night, enter burned houses to remove copper, metal wiring and pipelines for sale for scrap.

Some thieves have equipped their tactics by pretending to be civil servants and using technology to circumvent security systems, according to media reports.

In response to the wave of crime, the sheriff department formed a looter reduction team, entered specialized anti-theft teams and checked hundreds of uninhabited properties. They have also increased helicopter overflows and drone monitoring in the region.

“These efforts ensure that a continuous 24-hour patrol offers a consistent and visible presence of the law enforcement authorities, especially in districts that are still dealing with supply failures and increased security risks,” said the department in a statement.

At the beginning of the catastrophe, sheriff Robert Luna published a direct warning to looters: “You will be held accountable.”

The Department of the Sheriff of Los Angeles County offers a house check program in which the residents can request the MPs to patrol their real estate. Inquiries can be sent to altadenahomecheck@lasd.org.

“The reconstruction will take several years and the sheriff department and the Altadena station are committed to the community. And we will always bring in additional resources so that we can make sure that the theft and the entire crime are reduced,” said Lt. Márquez.
